In fact, Stephen Keenan’s death was one of the most shocking news stories of 2017. It all started when Stephen and his girlfriend, Alessia, planned to tackle the world’s most dangerous diver; The Blue Hole, in Dahab, Egypt.

Though safety divers were not to descend deeper than 30m, they were both supposed to meet at a depth of 52m.

Alessia was nowhere to be found when Stephen reached the designated spot after 20 seconds due to a timing issue.

In complete darkness, he let go of the rope and began to search for his lover.

When he found Alessia out of oxygen, he grabbed her and pushed her to the surface. While Alessia was on her back, Stephen was face down in the water. He was already in need of CPR when rescued by his safety team.

Stephen was taken to the nearest hospital in a taxi, since AD was not allowed at The Blue Hole at the time of the incident. However, it was later determined at the hospital that Stephen had not been revived.

In a report by Deeper Blue, it was confirmed that a series of mishaps as well as a lack of medically qualified personnel onshore had contributed to such an unfortunate event.
